Considerations for Your First Dinner Service

Many people are lucky enough to receive Denby dinnerware as wedding gifts, although with more and more couples living together before marriage, household items don’t feature as heavily on wedding gift lists as they once did. When you move into your first home together, a dinner service is not something you can manage without – we all need to eat after all! However, knowing which to choose can prove tricky for some.

When Will You Use Your Dinner Service?

The first step in choosing the right dinner service is to decide how it will be used. Dinner sets can be grouped into two main categories – casual and formal – and these generally differ in materials, colours and designs. If you don’t host many dinner parties, then focus on buying a dinner service for everyday use first. The great thing about Denby dinner sets is that they are hardwearing as well as beautiful, so many people find that they can actually use their dinner service for every occasion, although you may of course prefer to have different sets simply for variety.

What Do You Need?

While you can buy complete Denby dinner sets containing all the basic pieces you need, many people choose our tableware because they can mix and match, buying less or additional pieces than you would find in a boxed set. This will then give you a unique dinner service which matches your needs completely.

Before you start shopping, however, decide where you will keep your crockery. Make sure there is enough room to keep it easily and safely to avoid unnecessary scratching or chipping. While your Denby dinnerware will be knock and scratch-resistant up to a certain point, it is not invincible! Decide how many place settings you will need – not just everyday but for those dinner party occasions too. If you do decide that you need extra plates subsequently, however, you’ll be able to buy single pieces in the same range at a later date. What’s more, should we decide to discontinue any of our ranges, we will let you know at least 12 months before we do so, so that you can be sure to stock up on any missing pieces.

As well as dinner plates, side plates and bowls, you may wish to buy additional matching items which are available for many of our ranges. Matching place mats, gravy jugs, cookware and glassware are just some of the items which you can purchase to extend your range, and these could be items that you buy yourselves or request for gifts at Christmas, birthdays or even that wedding if and when it comes along.

Plain or Patterned?

The decision to go with plain or patterned dishes is completely a matter of personal taste. Some people find that if they go with a pattern they only like it to feature around the edge so that it isn’t under the food, whereas others don’t mind. Finding a pattern that appeals to both of you may also be more difficult than opting for a plainer design, or you may wish to go for a plainer everyday set and a patterned formal dinner service.
